Tales and Music from Highland Perthshire

Added on 13 May 2013

I am working on a new project with harpist Bill Taylor and storyteller and musician Bob Pegg, celebrating the collection of Lady Evelyn Stewart Murray of Blair Castle.

Lady Evelyn was an intellectually gifted woman who enjoyed the privileged upbringing of a Victorian artistocrat, but chose not to conform to the mores of her time.  In 1891 she collected 241 Gaelic tales and songs from people in Highland Perthshire.  The collection is unique in that it includes words and phrases of Perthshire dialect which has since vanished.

Tales and Music from Highland Perthshire combines Perthshire stories,
songs in Gaelic and Scots and English, and tunes played on the ancient
wire-strung clarsach, performed by Bob, Bill and me.

We will be offering a small number of performances centring around stories collected by Lady Evelyn, which were preserved in twelve manuscript volumes.  We will present Lady Evelyn’s tales as they might have been heard at a traditional ceilidh, with a mix of stories, songs and music.
